I am sorry to hear this. I read your previous post earlier this week, and it sounded very much as if autism was going to be the diagnosis – loss of language is usually a very strong indicator.
I have not personally been through this, but a friend of mine has. Her second child was perfectly normal until about 15 months and then started going through a lot of the same things that you are describing – loss of language, ignoring voices, staring at commercials on TV, wanting things done in a specific order/routine or else he would start head banging or throwing tantrums. In her case, she has come to the conclusion that this was a result of the MMR vaccination. There is no definitive link between this vaccination and autism, however, a couple of recent studies have suggested that some children are genetically pre-dispositioned towards autism, and if your child is one of those, it takes a “trigger” to bring it out (such as a reaction to a vaccination, an illness, etc). This theory is not proven, however it would explain why a child would be progressing normally, meeting all milestones, laughing, talking and then suddenly develop autism. But again, not enough is known about this to give you a concrete explanation as to why it happened to your son.
The only advice I can give you is to do everything you can for your son: read anything you can get your hands on (books, online articles, everything) and become the expert on this and be his advocate. There is no “cure” for autism, but there are things you can do to help your son be able to interact – including therapy, schooling, and even dietary changes. You may also want to consider therapy for yourself, as this is obviously a difficult time for you and your husband, and you will want to deal with the denial/grief/shock in the best way possible so that you can be best prepared to take care of your son.
My friend’s son is 4 1/2 years old now. He does still cling to his patterns and routines, and occasionally has tampers or head banging sessions, but he also goes to kindergarten, he turns his head in the direction of a voice, he replies when you speak to him, he responds to simple commands, and he interacts and plays with his siblings.
